Ben Lomond Historic Site & Old Rose Garden (10321 Sudley Manor Rd) -Ben Lomond is an antebellum farm that served as a hospital during the Civil War. The home was referenced in many Civil War-Era documents as the Pringle House because of the men who lived here in 1861. Many of the soldiers that were brought to the hospital penned their names and brief messages on the walls of the home. The grounds are home to a 5,200 square-foot garden of old roses (one of the largest public gardens devoted to antique roses in the U.S.). Inspired by a French garden, the collection has approximately 160 separate cultivars and 200 individual rose shrubs. www.pwcgov.org/historicpreservation

The reputedly haunted historic centre consists of four buildings: a courthouse, jail, church and a one-room schoolhouse. The grounds are open daily and include a self-guided interpretative trail and picnic area. Tours are offered Thursday-Monday, May through October from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment. www.pwcgov.org/historicpreservation
Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park (10708 Bristow Rd)-Two important Civil War Battles were fought on this “hallowed ground.” The Battle of Kettle Run was fought on August 27, 1862 and the Battle of Bristoe Station on October 14, 1863.
